In 1895 the Green and Sea Point Golf Club was founded and the first match between the club and Cape Golf Club (now Royal Cape Golf Club) was played in 1896 at Rondebosch which was the home of the Cape Golf Club at the time. Unfortunately military requirements in 1899 were paramount and the Common was converted into a miniature Sahara with the consequent tramping of thousands of mules and horses and golf had of necessity to give way to the needs of the Empire. In this respect, history repeated itself during the 1914-1918 war when Rondebosch were the sufferers. However, the Green and Sea Point Club arose in 1902 Phoenix-like from the ashes (and dust) of that fateful time and again flourished despite sinister rumours as to the extent of ground required for the Great Exposition which was reported to be threatening the links in 1904. The first known club championship took place in 1897. The club was reorganised and constituted in 1903 and changed its name to Metropolitan Golf Club. In 1906 the present links were taken over from the Council. The building known as the White House or old Racecourse stand upon the Common was also leased as a club house. Improvements were then made to both the course and the club house, culminating in 1915 with the opening of the really fine accommodation provided by the Metropolitan Club. Ever since 1906 the Club made steady progress and approached the Council on many occasions between 1906 and 1915 and suggested that this was a glorious opportunity Cape Town had so close at hand to provide an 18 hole golf course for the attraction of visitors. Sadly nothing came of this proposal right up to the last proposals in 1997 and 2000. Some of the better known members of the Club in the old days were H A Soloman who secured the extension of the Club House in 1915 and who presented the club every year with half a dozen oxen to drag the mower around the course. The present day Harry Soloman cup is named after him. H J C Stephan was a past Captain known for his generosity in the matter of gifts and loans. The present day Senior Inter Club competition is named after him. In 2006 the club was approached by council to accommodate the building of a new football stadium on the existing golf course . This was due to the fact that the country and cape town had obtained the rights to host the 2010 world cup football matches. After consultation with all its members and working closely with the city of cape town , approval was given by the club to redesign the golf course whereby all stakeholders were accommodated. The new design was approved at a special meeting in 2008 and the club will take possession in April 2010 of the new golf course. |
